Highbrow humor (vaguely humorous?) from Fyodor Dostoevsky: is there a cross-cultural "tincture" informing this gloomy aphorism? That is, what would it mean if Benjamin Franklin said this? Or, er, does Dostoievski know whereof he speaks? Hmm. Absent the satirical element, is this merely an empty utterance? And so on.
